Day Trips from Maputo

A quick hop across Maputo Bay drops you onto coral sand that squeaks underfoot and gin-clear water as warm as a bath. The marine reserve side swirls with parrotfish and brain coral. The village side carries the scent of charcoal-grilled squid.

Ride the tiny Komati River ferry and you reach 20 km of empty dunes where the only soundtrack is wind hissing through dune grass. Weekdays feel almost private.

Barely an hour from Maputo you can paddle the slow, tea-brown Umbeluzi past reed banks where fish eagles whistle overhead. The riverside market smokes piri-piri chicken that stains your fingers orange.

This corner of the reserve draws far fewer visitors than the southern gates. Expect elephant prints in red earth, lily ponds ringing with frog calls, and a quiet picnic spot beneath fever trees.

A slow ferry from Maputo's waterfront lands at Catembe. From there a sandy track bends south to Ponta's laid-back surf village where the air tastes of salt and grilled barracuda.
