Day Trips from Maputo

Day Trips from Maputo

The best excursions and trips you can do in a day

Maputo pays dividends to anyone who can spare an hour or two beyond the capital. In one day you can drift over coral gardens while snorkeling at Inhaca, glide past drowsy fishing villages inside the bay, or climb the battlements of a 19th-century fortress. Most outings lie between 50-100 km, served by shared chapa, the languid but photogenic CFM train, or a painless car rental. The reward is instant: you swap Maputo's sticky downtown hum for salt-lashed breezes, bird racket from the mangroves, and the bright din of small-town markets that look much the same as they did at independence. Roads south to Matola and north to Marracuene run smooth, while the ferry jetty at Catembe launches island-hopping plans. Leave around 7 a.m. and you will almost certainly snag a seat on the first boat or train. The return run still drops you at Maputo's seafood grills by dusk, good for watching fishing dhows slide across the darkening bay with a plate of peri-peri prawns in hand.

Inhaca Island

40 USD (boat + marine reserve fee)

Day Trip Tips

Make the most of your excursions.

  • Leave Baixa by 6:30 a.m. to catch the first chapa. Seats fill quickly and drivers wait for no one.
  • Pack a sarong and reef-safe sunscreen. Island shade is scarce and UV bites even in winter.
  • Cash is king outside Maputo, ATMs are scarce from Marracuene northward.
  • If the sea looks rough, skip Inhaca, boats do get cancelled and refunds take days.
  • Weekday trips shave crowds and prices alike. Locals travel Saturdays.
  • Keep your passport on you for the Macaneta ferry and any reserve gates.
  • Download offline maps. Cell signal dies halfway to Ponta.
  • Pack a cooler box, cold drinks are triple the price once you leave Maputo.
