Where to Stay in Maputo

Polana has been the city's most prestigious address since colonial days. Jacarandas arch over wide avenues that run from Tunduru Botanical Gardens to the bay. Two blocks east you taste salt on the breeze straight off the Indian Ocean. Embassy walls drip with bougainvillea; inside, midday hushes to a murmur. The Polana Serena Hotel keeps the neighborhood's reputation aloft from its white Edwardian perch above the water. Come dusk, Av. Julius Nyerere smells of espresso and charcoal-grilled prawns drifting through warm, humid air.

Baixa is the 19th-century Portuguese grid, wide boulevards and wrought-iron balconies still intact. Mercado Central roars under its iron vault, fish and spice sharp in the nose. The Central Train Station glows ochre in late light. Casa de Ferro, supposedly Eiffel's work, stands quiet on a side street. The Marginal promenade stretches north. This is Maputo raw, loud, and local.

Sommerschield sits between Polana and the center, diplomatic quarter by default. Embassy walls and bougainvillea hedges share blocks with NGO offices and a well-stocked Shoprite. Upscale restaurants murmur after dark. Streets stay leafy and calm. Birdsong beats traffic. Hotels here are discreet towers and serviced flats, not beach spectacles.

Malhangalene works hard between Polana's grandeur and Baixa's density. Tailors, hardware shops, small supermarkets, and Mozambican diners line the streets. Guesthouses undercut the tourist belt. Charcoal smoke and fermented beer drift above the main road. Hotel Cardoso clings to a clifftop above the bay. Its pool glints across the water on clear mornings.

Costa do Sol rolls north from Maputo along the Indian Ocean coast, seven kilometers from Baixa. Stilted seafood restaurants hover above warm, amber shallows, and the air carries salt and charcoal-grilled camarão the instant the taxi leaves the highway. The water stays calm, sheltered, never surf-blasted, and the sand keeps its heat long after sunset. Locals pack the shore on weekends. Weekday mornings feel almost private.

Museu takes its name from the Natural History Museum housed in a grand Manueline-Gothic building at the neighborhood's center, where a whale skeleton hangs in silence above a cool marble floor. It sits between the diplomatic calm of Sommerschield and the energy of Baixa, so the streets feel neither tourist-facing nor strictly local. Guesthouses occupy converted Portuguese villas on quiet side roads, their high-ceilinged rooms carrying the slight must of old plaster and wood that no air freshener can override.

Catembe is the fishing community across Maputo Bay, now reachable via the Maputo-Catembe Bridge completed in 2018. It is a world removed from city noise: dhow boats creak on their moorings as the tide shifts, the mangrove shoreline smells of brine and river iron, and the view back across the water toward the Maputo skyline is the finest the city offers. Accommodation runs to simple guesthouses and one special art-filled lodge. Most people come for half a day. Those who stay rarely regret it.

Sommerschield is a calm residential quarter between Polana and Sommerschield where expat families and long-term NGO workers rent villas behind high walls draped in flowering vines. The streets are wide and unhurried. The loudest sounds are sprinklers on lawns and the distant call to prayer from the city center mosque. Accommodation options are mostly serviced apartments and small guesthouses in converted family homes, making this the most livable district in Maputo for anyone staying longer than a week.
