Climate conditions and crowd levels for each month of the year.
January brings Maputo at its most tropical. Highs of 30°C (87°F) and lows around 22°C (72°F), with nearly 170mm of rain falling across the month. Often in dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that do little to reduce the humidity. The city's outdoor markets and seafront fill with a summer-holiday energy. The pace of life slows in the midday heat.
February is very similar. Highs nudge up to 31°C (88°F) with lows at 22°C (73°F) and around 130mm of rain. The wet-season atmosphere remains in full force. The Indian Ocean is warm and inviting if you can find a break between showers. Late afternoons occasionally deliver spectacular lightning over the bay.
March sees the rains ease very slightly, with rainfall dropping to around 124mm. Temperatures remain firmly in wet-season territory at 30°C (87°F) by day and 21°C (70°F) overnight. The humidity is still present but the worst of the peak-summer intensity begins to soften toward the month's end. There's a subtle shift in the light that signals the approaching dry season.
April is a transitional month that most travelers find agreeable. Highs at 29°C (85°F), lows at 19°C (66°F), and rainfall down to a much more manageable 58mm. The humidity backs off noticeably and the afternoons become comfortable for walking. Maputo in April has a relaxed, post-summer feel. The city's outdoor cafe terraces start coming back to life.
By May, Maputo has settled into its dry season and the difference is immediately apparent. Highs sit at 28°C (82°F) but lows have dropped to around 16°C (62°F), meaning evenings call for a layer. With only about 33mm of rain expected, this is an excellent month for exploring the city's Baixa district and waterfront on foot. Little concern for afternoon downpours.
June is one of the most pleasant months in Maputo by most measures. Highs at 26°C (79°F), lows at 14°C (58°F), and only 18mm of rain. The air is clear and dry, mornings can feel almost brisk. The light on the city's tiled colonial facades looks its best in these conditions. South African visitors tend to discover Maputo in June, giving the city a lively but not overwhelming energy.
July is the coolest month of the year, with highs of 26°C (78°F) and lows dipping to 14°C (57°F). Rainfall is barely a factor at around 20mm, and Maputo's outdoor cafe culture comes into its own in this dry, mild weather. Pack a jacket for evenings. The temperature drop after sunset is real and catches a lot of first-time visitors off guard.
August is very close to July in character. Highs at 26°C (80°F), lows at 14°C (58°F), rainfall just 15mm across the entire month. The dry season is at its most settled and reliable, which is why August draws strong visitor numbers to Maputo and the surrounding coast. Day-trippers head to Inhaca Island on the weekend ferries.
Temperatures begin their upward climb in September, with highs reaching 28°C (82°F) and lows rising to 17°C (63°F). Rainfall ticks up slightly to around 43mm but remains well within the comfortable range. The shoulder-season quality of September in Maputo makes it a quietly excellent choice. Warm but not humid, busy but not packed.
October heats up in Maputo. Highs hit 27°C (82°F). Lows settle at 18°C (65°F). Rain inches up to 61mm. Wet season edges closer. Expect first dramatic afternoon build-ups on the horizon. Still prime time to visit. Ideal if July and August felt too chilly for beach lounging.
November welcomes the wet season. Highs reach 28°C (84°F). Lows hover at 19°C (67°F). Rainfall climbs to 81mm. Verdant green erupts around the city. Flame trees ignite in scarlet along main avenues. City pulses with early summer energy. Festive mood sparks well before December.
December dives into wet season. Highs peak at 30°C (87°F). Lows linger at 21°C (70°F). Rain totals 84mm. Mozambican families flood the streets. Restaurants brim, waterfront hums. Celebrations start early and loud. Expect sudden, heavy downpours. Rarely an all-day washout. Afternoon bursts, not steady drizzle.
