Maputo sits far enough south of the equator, at around 26 degrees latitude on the Indian Ocean coast, that it has a distinct dry season, something that sets it apart from the more uniformly steamy tropical cities further north in Mozambique. The broad pattern is simple enough: a warm, wet season from roughly November through March or April, and a dry, cooler stretch from May through September. Within that framework there's a lot of nuance worth understanding before you pack. The wet season in Maputo is not the relentless wall of rain you might get in equatorial Africa. Rainfall tends to come in afternoon downpours that clear quickly, leaving the evenings warm and thick with humidity. January and February are the peak, with highs typically around 30°C (87°F) and overnight lows around 22°C (72°F). Comfortable enough if you're used to heat. But the humidity makes a light cotton shirt feel like a wet towel by noon. The Indian Ocean moderates the worst extremes, so Maputo rarely gets the suffocating heat of interior southern Africa. The dry season, by contrast, is pleasant. From June through August, highs hover around 26°C (78-80°F) and nights can drop to 14°C (57-58°F). Cool enough that a light jacket becomes useful after dark. Rainfall in these months is minimal, often just 15-20mm across the entire month, and the sky tends toward the clear blue that makes the city's famous flame trees and seafront promenade look their best. September and October warm back up before the rains return, making them a transitional shoulder season with good weather and fewer visitors than the July peak.
